These are autobiographical pieces, based on photographs from my childhood. I've recently rediscovered these photographs and learned to read psychological meanings into them that I had not been aware of before. The images are intentionally blurry, echoing the fuzziness of memory. “Blanket: Wrapped in My Parents’ Love” is cross-stitched in wool on a cotton blanket. The other four pieces in this series are done in needlepoint, a technique chosen for its domestic connotations. The safety and stability associated with a picture in needlepoint are at odds with the slightly disturbing quality of the images. To view full-size photos: wait a few seconds for photos to load. When a white box with a black camera icon pops up as you mouse over a thumbnail, click on the thumbnail. A full-size image will appear, with caption below. If you mouse over the right edge of the photo, a “next” button will appear, or a “previous” button if you mouse over the left edge. |
